What is fair housing? The Fair Housing Act is a federal law that prohibits discrimination in housing and makes equal housing opportunity a reality for all. It applies to the sale, rental, financing, and advertising of housing throughout the United States.
It is illegal to discriminate because of race or color, national origin, religion, familial status, sex (gender, disability, military status, and ancestry.
Before you rent-know your rights. Housing providers must treat you fairly and cannot discriminate against you based on a protected class. Landlords may not refuse to rent to you, set different term or conditions for renting, refuse to make reasonable, accommodations for a person with a disability, discriminate in services or facilities related to the rental.
